Artistic Guild Wedding Photography Award

I was very humbled to receive an International award for my wedding photography from the Artistic Guild of Wedding Photojournalists International . The world competion for these awards reflects the work of many of the finest wedding photographers in the world. My award was for the image attached here. The only other Colorado resident photographer to place in this competion was my friend Otto Schulze. Otto moved to Denver from South Africa and worked with me last year as a second shooter. I saw his talent then. I scored in one category but Otto scored in several gaining a 4th place overall in the competion.

Stanley Hotel and St. Malo's Chapel Wedding

What an amazing venue combination for a Northern Colorado wedding...St Malo's Chapel and the historic Stanley Hotel ! That's the combo Emily and Eric put together for their wedding and we were blessed in getting to photograph it. Emily has such a joyful spirit and it radiated all day next to her handsome pilot new husband, Eric. Assisting me was my talented photographer friend, Kent Meireis. Also, keeping the day rolling along smoothly was wedding planner Lindsay Jarvis who was also fun to work with. Here is a slideshow of the day.

St Vincent DePaul Church & Red Rocks Wedding

We had the amazing honor of photographing Lisa and Evan's wedding with the ceremony at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Denver, followed by a grand reception at Red Rocks Visitor Center. Lisa and Evan were willing to go with the flow when a last minute concert of Insane Clown Posse was scheduled to coincide with their reception. DePaul University Inaugural Track & Field Relays

DePaul University in Chicago is the 9th largest private university in the United States and the largest Catholic University in the United States. Finally, after many years, the DePaul Track & Field team has secured it's own facility and on May 14th they inaugurated it with The DePaul Relays. As a former cross-country / track runner of DePaul I accepted an invitation to attend the festivities and couldn't resist taking my camera along. Here are some of my favorite pics of the day. The Denver Chapter of International Society of Event Specialists (ISES) sponsored a private prom party at Mile High Station to let an adult crowd re-live what did or did not happen at their prom. It was like a costume party in many ways with amazing decorations, flowers, music and food provided by ISES members. As a member, I was selected to be the photographer of the evening. This past month I attended the Annual Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) convention. It was great interacting with some of the best wedding photographers in the world and attending the massive trade show where the photography industry promotes the latest technology. I got some time to walk around Vegas and take a few pictures including some fellow photographers having a private poker tournament at Caesar's Palace. Hitting news stands nationwide is the latest issue of Bridal Star HAIRSTYLES magazine. Thanks to Leslie Snyder of LesliesArts.com 24 of my bridal pictures made it into this issue including the two-page spread below. I've had the good fortune of working with Leslie on a number of weddings, both in Denver and the Vail area, where she does on-location hair and make-up. Because of Leslie's national reputation in her specialty field, Bridal Star Magazine asked her for some articles on hair and make-up. It was an honor for her to request my imagery and for the magazine to use so much of it.

Three More International Wedding Photography Awards

This week I got the great news that three of my wedding images placed in the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) quarterly contest. WPJA is such a prestigious organization because you can't just join it, you have to be elected into it. There were twenty categories of wedding imagages and 20 top places awarded in each category. I scored 9th in the Weather category with the picture below and also 4th and 8th place in the Rehearsal Dinner category.

Eckhart Tolle , Jesh de Rox, and now Oprah Winfrey

Since helping Eckhart Tolle do a workshop in Boulder almost four years ago and spending time with him I've been a big fan of his message about "The Power of Now"; which is about staying focused in the present moment. That same message resonated with my friend Jesh de Rox, maybe the best photographer in the world at the present time. So, last fall, when we both heard Eckhart was making a public appearance for the 1st time in three years in New York City, we decided to go hear him and apply his message to our photography efforts...photographing from inside the moment. It was a great time and we were wow'd by Eckhart's message but never in our wildest dreams did we think Eckhart would be doing a 10 week online seminar program, starting March 3rd, with Oprah Winfrey, another person who crossed my path briefly way back in the late 80's. So, three of my favorite people... all connected...life can truly be exciting at times. Here a picture of Jesh de Rox from our NYC trip.

Unusual Details Found at Weddings

As a photographer I'm always focused on getting the details at a wedding, like the flowers, the rings special decorations, nuances of the wedding dress etc. But also I'm always open to finding random details that jump out at me.

Sometimes there's a story behind the picture, like the bride's veil laying on the bed next to a picture of the bride's deceased mother, on her wedding day... or a butterfly amongst flowers.

Vail Mountain Wedding for Leslie & Tim

Atop Vail Mountain is Eagles Nest where the gondola stops and where a mountain top wedding site sits a 1/4 mile walk from Eagles Nest Lodge where the Blue Moon Bar and a gorgeous reception hall awaits any wedding party and guests willing to experience a Rocky Mountain High wedding. Denver Botanical Gardens and DTC Hyatt Wedding

If you have never been to the Denver Botanical Gardens you owe it to yourself to check it out. Lucky me I got to photograph Tiffany and Jason's wedding in this lush paradise. After roaming the gardens for fun pictures after the ceremony we all limoed to the DTC Hyatt for a great reception. Jennifer and Jeff came from Houston for their Rocky Mountain wedding on a the private ranch of a relative in McCoy, Colorado. Jennifer picked wild flowers on the mountaintop to create her wedding bouquet. A gathering of family and close friends from around the country enjoyed a private ceremony beneath a tent on the mountain then went indoors for a marvellous catered dinner inside the ranch house.

I had the joy of photographing with Kent Meireis on one of his weddings a few weeks back. Kent will return the favor to me in July. Kent is a wonderful person and a great photographer with many accolades as a newspaper photojournalist as well as top wedding photographer. There is always something to learn photographing with a peer.

It was a beautiful wedding in Evergreen , Colorado and I especially liked the above photo I took as the bride and bridesmaids took a hike into the woods.

Tapestry House Wedding-Jordan and Dustin

We photographed a beautiful destination wedding this past Sunday at The Tapestry House in LaPorte, Colorado for Jordan and Dustin, two Air Force officiers.

In fact, Jordan just graduated from the Air Force Academy last Thursday and married her sweatheart who had graduated a year ago. What a lovely couple and what wonderful families who came from all over the country to enjoy a Northern Colorado wedding.

Only about 20% of my weddings are in Northern Colorado even though I live in Fort Collins, so when I get to photograph close to home it's always extra nice.

Helping me on Sunday was my talented 2nd shooter from South Africa, Otto, and our own supermodel, Lauren who is taking time off from her New York/Italian fashion modeling career to focus more on being behind the camera instead of in front of it.

Last week in Vegas, attending the WPPI convention as well as the Digital Wedding Forum convention I got to spend time with several of Colorado's finest wedding photographers. We support and encourage each other; realizing every bride has to find that photographer who best fits her needs.

International Accolade of Excellence Award

I just returned from the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International Convention in Las Vegas and was humbled to receive an Accolade of Excellence Award in the Wedding 16x20 Print Competion. The print is from a wedding I photographed last June at The Air Force Academy Chapel in Colorado Springs. The WPPI show is a highlight of the year because it brings together over 10,000 top wedding photographers from around the world. It always energizes me to network with many of the top world photographers and share information about how we, collectively, are striving to produce the best photographic product for our brides.

1st Place - Wedding Photojournalist Association

I just got flattering news that my above photo won 1st place in the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) 2006 Winter Photo Competition in the wedding photo category "Departure". Here are the Judges Comments:

"JUDGES COMMENTS: I find this picture interesting in the way the chair is tipped over on the ground. Is it accident, did it fall or is it a protocol that sends a message to reveal the night is over. I kept coming back to this picture wondering why.Empty tables, an upset chair – everything in the picture is a sign for an end. After a long day, the bride and the groom tiredly leave the party. Perfect."

Well, the story is the groom tipped it over a second before (I got that pic too) to create a barrier as he and his bride made a retreat to their bridal suite.

This award is very special to me because, first, WPJA is not a photography organization that a photographer can just join. You have to be selected. There at are about 30 of us WPJA wedding photographers in Colorado out of an estimated 1200. Then to win an award in competion with many of the best wedding photographers in the world is a humbling experience.

An Intimate Denver Wedding

Denver International Airport Displays My Photos

DenverInternational Airport is currently displaying two of my fine art photography images, one on Concourse A and another on Concourse C. These images are part of an International Photography Exhibition featuring about 80 world recognized photographers. A third image of mine is being added to a special DIA exhibition in May. Wedding Album of the Year - 2nd Place

We just recently received a huge honor in having one of our in-house custom designed albums receiving 2nd Place for Wedding Album of the Year by professional Photographers Association of Colorado. Photographers from the entire Rocky Mountain Region participated in the annual print and album competion. The winning album features the wedding of Paige and James last July in Denver where they were married at the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church and had their reception at the Brown Palace Hotel.

We just did a wonderful Catholic wedding in Fort Collins for Kari and David. The ceremony was at St. Joseph's Church downtown and the reception was at the new parish center of Elizabeth Ann Seaton Church on the south side of town.

Another International Photo Award

I was notified this summer that my St Malo's Chapel Bride shot won an Accolade of Excellence Award from The Wedding & Portrait Photographers International mid-year 8x10 competition. This adds to the two Accolade of Excellence Awards I recieved last Spring at the Annual WPPI 16x20 Print Competition. I am very humbled by this recognition since it is so select and I am competing with the best wedding photographers in the world.

I am so blessed with being so busy this wedding season. We have been non-stop since April and booked every weekend until late December. Our priorities have been to post-process all our images, designing albums and talking to brides about 2007, which is starting to book up very nicely.

There are several weddings and engagement shoots we have not been able to acknowledge in our blog yet but we will be posting new pictures on the website soon showing off some of the amazing imagery we have been able to capture recently.

The picture here is from our wedding with Jenny and Tory on May 28th...I was on a ladder taking formal pictures when I spied this flower girl wandering beneath the shrubery off to the side of the yard. Then, I saw the cat wander in...I jumped off the ladder and was in the bushes in a heartbeat. The formals were slightly delayed.

Sandy & Tony Wedding

We had the honor of photographing Sandy and Tony's wedding two week-ends ago at Stonebrook Manor. Tony kept us entertained before we sent him and Sandy off to Costa Rica. Sandy surprised Tony at the reception by serenading him with a beautiful song.

Margot & Dean Wedding

We had the honor of photographing the Margot and Dean wedding this weekend in Genessee, Colorado. We had a full moon and Margo decided to blow it in Dean's direction. A lovely couple, very loving families, and a great experience for us.
Check the lunar calendar and if your wedding has a full moon we have lots of different ideas on how to capture it. We've never seen this photo idea used before.

Dancing in a Fountain

Yesterday I had the good fortune of doing an engagement shoot for Paige and James, whose wedding we are photographing in July.
I found an empty fountain in Cheeseman Park in Denver and let them practice their 1st dance. They made the music and I took the pictures.

Colorado Springs Venues

We have booked several Colorado Springs weddings for this coming season. This past week we were down in Colorado Springs and had the opportunity to capture some images of two venues we will be at. The first is Garden of the Gods where we will be doing some special bridal portraits...here is a picture in the park with a view of Pike's Peak in the distance. we caught some beautiful backlight on a grove of Spring Green trees.

The second place we photographed is the Air Force Academy Chapel, a most dramatic venue for one of our July weddings.

I'm amazed at how many emails I receive from prospective brides and clients asking about the music on our website...often asking what CD the music is on. Well, the answer is the music is a piano improv piece by our son, Previn, who happens to be a very accomplished composer. (Unfortunately, it is not on a CD at this time.) He calls the piece, "Oasis of the Soul". Previn is also an amazing singer with a voice similiar to Josh Groban. Previn has also performed lead roles in five operas this past year and just this past week in Denver, he was awarded 1st place in an orchestral composer's competition, along with being the guest composer at the inaugural performance of the piece. Previn has performed at many weddings in the past few years, often doubling as a keyboard player and singer. He is also an amazing photographer in his own right and has assisted me at a number of weddings as a 2nd shooter. Some of his images are sprinkled throughout our site. He did produce a CD a few years ago and it gets airplay on NPR stations and sells on Amazon.com.

Another Rocky Mountain High Wedding

Elizabeth and I had a great weekend up in Estes Park, Colorado photographing the Katie and Brady wedding. We photographed over 12 hours but the day just flew by chasing the lovely Katie and the charming Brady. There was so much fun throughout the day including a stop we made at a lake following the ceremony at the famous Saint Malo Chapel where Pope John Paul stayed in the early 90's.

Hanging out with the World's Best Wedding Photographers

Still in Las Vegas with a number of the world's best wedding photographers. Got a chance to spend a good bit of time with both Ryan Schembri and Jerry Ghionis of XSIGHT Studios in Australia. (Ryan on the left and Jerry on the right. Thank you, Elizabeth, for taking the picture.) The Aussies seem to be doing the most innovative work in wedding photography these days; so learning how guys like Ryan and Jerry are approaching, not only their capturing of images, but, just as importantly, how images are massaged in post-production electronic darkroom treatments. Ryan was just named Australia's Master Photographer of the Year. Jerry got the award last year.

Las Vegas Photography Convention

Elizabeth and I are in Las Vegas for the WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) Convention with wedding photographers from around the world.
Got to visit with Yervant from Australia last evening, one of my favorite wedding photographers. Yervant is so warm a person and so talented as a photographer.
Attending this show is always an inspiration for me to challenge myself in trying to find new photographic ideas.
Also, Elizabeth and I had a chance to visit the Impressionistic Art Gallery at The Bellagio...looking at the work of Masters is also very inspiring in terms of composition along with the use of light and color. (Picture taken by our cab driver...wahdya expect?)

Last Saturday, April 1st Elizabeth and I were in Bellvue, Colorado for a fund raiser.
Elizabeth was part of the entertainment with the country rock band she plays in, Poudre River Band. Here's a picture of Elizabeth wailing on a Fleetwood Mac song along with her incredibly talented friend Lona, one of the best C&W singers I've ever heard.

Thank you for finding this blog...I hope it finds a life of it's own in capturing my thoughts and some of my images in the journey forward...I struggled researching blog applications, trying to find one that would suit my needs...hopefully this is the answer.

My goal as a photographer is to post at least one image with every entry I make here...so, since I'm a wedding photographer I should post a recent wedding image...here is one I really like from a February wedding this year...lovely Andrea getting bustled in the church before climbing into the limo...I liked the fact that Andrea's mother and sister were in the picture and the red, white and blue color scheme of things screamed out to me, "American Bride".
